It's a little presumptuous to assume that everyone who plays is a him, no?

I'd hate to see the world full of he/she, his/her etc. I think that's acceptable how it is.

Not unless "attacker" was "attackers". "He" is used when the sex of the antecedent is unknown.

Are you saying "their" never refers to a singular? It can only refer to a plural?

No, it shouldn't. That sort of shorthand is dependent upon personal tastes in style, which means that the grammar is fine.

It depends entirley on personal taste, it makes sense but some people feel that it should be different, but in term both ways of grammar are correct.

In this case its not just a stylistic choice. There's no reason to add complexity to the sentence by using the present perfect when the simple past is both more concise and more accurate. The attack neither happened at an indefinite time in the past (the time is specified) nor continues to the present, therefore the present perfect is simply wrong.
